"Still Tonight"

The silence was deafining. Neither could remember
exactly how long it had been like this. Since he had
come here to tell her...

They sat unmoving. Side by side but not really
together at all. How had it come to this? They
should have had so much more time. time...

"How long?" she asked, not looking at him, her voice
loud in the silent room

"2 years.. possibly more," he sighed.

Suddenly he turned and looked at her, grasping her
hands in his.

"Dee, you know, if there was any other way, any at all
I would..."

"I know." she cut him off. She stared down at their
joined hands. Hers fit entirely inside of his. A
perfect fit that's what she had always thought about
them. Even after he left her behind that first time.
Their souls were a perfect fit. Now joined for all
time. They would always be together, even apart.
That thought didn't make the pain any easier, or any
less however.

"I don't know how to say goodbye," he whispered.

Remembering the last time he had said those very words
to her she couldn't help but smile, a little. Though
things had changed drastically since then, some
things, the important ones, never would. That was
something she could be grateful for during the years
to come.

"I don't like goodbyes, how about ... until next
time," she said finally looking at him. She could see
by the look in his eyes that he remembered that long
ago day as well.

He smiled, but just as quickly it faded replaced by
the saddest look she had perhaps ever seen.

"I can't expect you to wait on me, Deanna. I mean we
don't even know for sure how long... you should..."

She silenced him with a kiss. One of the most soul
searching and intense kisses they had ever shared.
Filled with warmth and love. Sending one clear
message. No more words.

Breaking off they held each other for long moments.
Finally he pulled away and stood up, silently offering
her his hand. Grasping it tight they walked to the
adjorning room together.

Tommorrow would be what it was supposed to be.
Tommorrow he would have to pack and walk away.
Perhaps forever. But that was tommorrow.

***As I watch you move, across the moonlit room
There's so much tenderness in your loving
Tomorrow I must leave, the dawn knows no reprieve
God give me strength when I am leaving...

So raise your hands to heaven and pray
That we'll be back together someday

Tonight, I need your sweet caress
Hold me in the darkness
Tonight, you calm my restlessness
You relieve my sadness

As we move to embrace, tears run down your face
I whisper words of love, so softly
I can't believe this pain, it's driving me insane
Without your touch, life will be lonely

So raise your hands to heaven and pray
That we'll be back together someday

Tonight, I need your sweet caress
Hold me in the darkness
Tonight, you calm my restlessness
You relieve my sadness

Morning has come, another day
I must pack my bags and say goodbye... ***

Until then, they had tonight.
